Install guide

Manual setup

1

Copy the full tracking code

In Hitsteps, open your site settings and copy the full JavaScript tracking code.

2

Find shared layout placement

Look for a footer.php, footer.asp, global footer, template layout, or similar file that renders on all pages.

3

Paste before closing body

Paste the tracking code before the closing body tag so it loads after your page content.

4

Upload and clear cache

Save and upload your changes, then clear any website, CDN, or template cache.

5

Verify live visitors

Open the website and watch the Hitsteps dashboard for your current visit.

Good to know

  • If the site has no shared footer, add the code to each HTML page.
  • Use the full tracking code, not only the API key, for manual installs.
  • Place only one copy of the Hitsteps code on each page.
