The plugin is free. Heatmaps are a paid feature, included in your 7-day Pro trial. No credit card required.

What a WordPress click heatmap shows

A traffic count tells you that a page was visited. A click heatmap shows which parts of that page people used.

Menus and navigation

See which menu links receive clicks. Compare the routes people take with the pages you want them to find.

Buttons and forms

Check clicks on calls to action and form submit buttons. A click shows interest; it does not confirm a successful form submission.

Product cards and cart buttons

Find the products and shopping links that attract clicks on a WooCommerce page. For order and revenue reports, see WooCommerce analytics, available on Pro and above.

How to track heatmaps in WordPress

Connect the plugin once, then let clicks from your public pages build the reports.

Connect your account

Open Settings > Hitsteps in WordPress. Choose Create account and connect for a new account, or Existing account if you already use Hitsteps.

Keep click tracking on

In the plugin settings, keep Heatmaps and Page Analysis set to On. It is on by default. Your account also needs a plan that includes heatmaps.

Open your click reports

Once visitors have clicked on your public pages, open Heatmap or Page Analysis in the Hitsteps dashboard. Start with a page that already gets visits.

Put clicks next to visitors and traffic sources

A quiet button is easier to investigate when you know whether the page got visitors in the first place. Use live visitor and traffic reports alongside your click heatmaps to decide which pages need attention.

Keep page interaction and traffic reports in one dashboard, rather than checking a heatmap in isolation. Read the WordPress analytics guide for the wider setup, or compare the approaches in our Microsoft Clarity comparison and Hotjar comparison.

This page covers click heatmaps and Page Analysis. It does not offer scroll maps, mouse-movement maps or session recordings. See what the website heatmap tool includes for the full scope.

A free plugin, with heatmaps on Growth and above

New accounts start with a 7-day Pro trial. After the trial, choose Growth or a higher plan to keep using heatmaps. Free and Starter do not include heatmaps.

The Free plan includes one website, 2,000 monthly pageviews and 14 days of visitor history. Heatmap click allowances and archive lengths depend on your paid plan.

WordPress heatmap questions

Is the WordPress heatmap plugin free?

The Hitsteps Web Analytics plugin is free to install. Heatmaps are included on Growth plans and above, and in the 7-day Pro trial for new accounts. The Free and Starter plans do not include heatmaps.

How do I turn on heatmaps in WordPress?

Install and activate the plugin, then connect your account in Settings > Hitsteps. Keep Heatmaps and Page Analysis On. After visitors click on your public pages, open Heatmap or Page Analysis in the Hitsteps dashboard.

What can a WordPress click heatmap show?

It shows where visitors click, including menus, links, buttons, product cards and form submit buttons. A button click alone does not prove that a form was submitted successfully or that an order was placed.

Can I use it on a WooCommerce store?

Yes. Click heatmaps can show activity on product cards and cart buttons. Ecommerce analytics, including order-to-visitor reports, is a separate feature on Pro plans and above.

Does this include scroll maps or session recordings?

This WordPress guide covers click heatmaps and Page Analysis. It does not offer scroll maps, mouse-movement maps or session recordings. Use the click reports alongside live visitors and traffic sources to investigate a page.
