Visitor counting guide

How to check how many people visit your website

Only your own site can tell you. Add one small tracking code, open the live view and you can see how many people visit, which pages they open and where they came from. This guide explains what the numbers mean and how to get them.

  • Works on any site where you can add a line of code, plus a WordPress plugin and a Shopify app
  • Free plan: 1 website and up to 2,000 pageviews a month
  • No credit card needed to start

Overview

The short answer

Nobody can read a site's visitor count from the outside. The number only exists if something on the site counts the visits. That is all a tracker does: one small code on your pages notes each visit and sends it to a dashboard.

  • Hits are not people. One page can cause dozens of hits, and robots add more.
  • Use visitors to answer how many people, and pageviews to answer how much gets read.
  • A tracker starts counting the day you add it. It cannot show visits from before that.
  • Numbers for other people's sites are estimates, not counts.

Hits, pageviews, visits and visitors: what each one counts

These four words get mixed up all the time. That is why two tools can show very different numbers for the same site.

Word What it counts Good for Watch out for
Hit Every file a browser asks your server for: the page, each image, each script Server load and hosting limits One page can cause dozens of hits, so a big number says little about people
Pageview One page opened or reloaded Seeing which pages get read One person opening ten pages makes ten pageviews
Visit One stay on your site, from the first page until the person stops browsing Seeing how often people come The same person coming back later makes a new visit
Visitor One browser or device the tool recognises Seeing how many people you reach A person on a phone and a laptop can count twice, and ad blockers hide some visitors

If you only remember one rule: visitors tell you how many people, pageviews tell you how much gets read.

Four steps

Check your own numbers in four steps

  1. Look at what you already have.
  2. Add one tracking code.
  3. Watch your own visit arrive.
  4. Read the numbers that answer your question.
Step 1

Look at what you already have

Your site builder or hosting panel may show a basic visit count. It is a fine first look. If it says hits, read that number as server activity, not as people. If it can separate people from robots, trust it more.

Step 2

Add one tracking code

Create your account and copy your tracking code. Paste it before the closing body tag on your pages. On WordPress or Shopify you can skip the code and use the plugin or the app instead: see the WordPress guide or the Shopify guide. Other platforms are in the full setup guide.

Step 3

Watch your own visit arrive

Open the live view, then open your site in another tab. Your visit should appear. If it does not, an ad blocker may be hiding it. Open your site in a private window with extensions off, or on your phone over mobile data, then check again. Also check that the code is on the page.

Step 4

Read the numbers that answer your question

Your question Where to look
How many people visited? Open Visitors, then Statistics Overview.
How many times was one page opened? Open Pages, then Popular Pages.
Where did people come from? Open Referral, then Top Referrals, or SEO, then Search Engines.
Who is on the site right now? Open the Live Dashboard.
Accuracy

Why your numbers may look off

  • Your own visits count too. You can keep them out in the dashboard; the support page shows how.
  • Robots visit sites all day. Trackers filter the obvious ones, and none catches every one.
  • Ad blockers, browser privacy settings and cookie choices hide some visitors from every tracker. Expect a close count, not a perfect one.
  • Compare the same weekdays, and look at weeks rather than single days.
Other sites

Can I see how many people visit someone else's website?

Not exactly. Only the owner can see real numbers. Some tools publish estimates for any site. They build them from samples and models, so use them to compare sites roughly, not to count visitors. Hitsteps measures sites you own or manage.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How can I see how many people visit my website for free?

Put a tracker on the site. Hitsteps has a Free plan for 1 website with up to 2,000 pageviews a month. Create an account, add the tracking code, then open the live view. Your numbers start building from your first visit.

What is the difference between hits and visitors?

A hit is one file requested from your server. A visitor is one browser or device that your analytics tool recognises. One visitor opening one page can cause dozens of hits, which is why hits make a poor measure of people.

Why does my host show more traffic than my analytics?

Hosting statistics usually count every request to your server, including images, scripts and robots. A tracking code in the browser counts pages that actually load for a person, so its number is usually lower and a better guide to real visitors.

How do I see how many visits one page has gotten?

Open Pages, then Popular Pages, and find the page in the list. It shows how often the page was opened. Set the date range to the days you care about.

How long until I see my first visitor?

Usually within a few minutes of adding the code. Open your site in a new tab, then check the live view. If nothing shows, make sure the code is on the page and try a browser without an ad blocker.

Can I see how many people visit a competitor's website?

Not exactly. Only the owner can see real numbers. Tools that estimate traffic for any site work from samples and models, so treat their figures as rough. Hitsteps measures sites you own or manage.

What happens after the 7-day trial?

Your account starts with a 7-day Pro trial, and no credit card is needed. When it ends you can stay on the Free plan (1 website, up to 2,000 pageviews a month) if your email is verified and your site fits its limits, or choose a paid plan. No automatic charges.
