Umami alternative

A hosted Umami alternative with a live visitor view, live chat and heatmaps

Looking for an Umami alternative you do not have to host yourself? Hitsteps is a hosted web analytics service: add one snippet, see who is on your site now and talk to them from the same account. Umami is a clean, privacy-first analytics tool, and a lot of people pick it over Google Analytics for that reason.

The split is simple. Hitsteps gives you a live visitor view on Free, live chat from Starter at $4.99 a month and click heatmaps from Growth at $9.99 a month. Umami is open source and free to self-host; its hosted Cloud plan starts free, and replays and heatmaps there need the $200 a month Business plan (pricing, checked 26 Oct 2026).

Umami details come from its pricing, product analytics and replays documentation pages, checked 26 Oct 2026. Umami counts events (pageviews and custom events), Hitsteps counts pageviews, so the free limits are not like for like. Plans change, so check the vendor before you decide.

Where Umami is strong

Umami is open source under the MIT license and can be self-hosted at no license fee, which matters if your team wants full control of where the data lives. Its tracker does not use cookies, and its documentation lists funnels, journeys, retention and revenue reports plus session replay and heatmaps (docs, checked 26 Oct 2026). Its free hosted plan is generous for one small site.

Try the live workflow

Create a free Hitsteps account and open the live visitor view. Your free account includes a 7-day Pro trial with no credit card. After the trial you can stay on Free, which includes the live visitor view, as long as your email is verified and your site fits Free's limits (up to 2,000 pageviews a month, 1 site), or choose a paid plan. To keep talking to visitors after the trial, choose Starter at $4.99 a month.

Hitsteps does not record or replay sessions. The live visitor view shows who is on your site now, and heatmaps show where people click.

Is Hitsteps a good Umami alternative?

Yes, if you want hosted analytics with a live visitor view and a way to chat with visitors, without running a server. If you want open source code, self-hosting or session replay, Umami may fit better.

Does Hitsteps need self-hosting?

No. Hitsteps is hosted only: you add one snippet to your site and use the dashboard in your browser. Umami can be either hosted on its Cloud or self-hosted.

Does Umami have heatmaps and session replay?

Yes. On Umami Cloud they need the Business or Enterprise plan; self-hosted installs include them from v3.1 (replay) and v3.2 (heatmaps) (source, checked 26 Oct 2026). Hitsteps has click heatmaps from Growth at $9.99 a month and does not record sessions.

Does Umami have live chat?
