What Google Analytics gives you
Numbers. How many visits you got, which channels they came from, and how your Google Ads campaigns converted.
Most WordPress sites start with Google Analytics. It is free, everyone knows it, and Site Kit makes it easy to add. So why would you look at anything else?
We hear the same few reasons from WordPress owners. They want analytics that is easier on privacy. They want to see who is on the site right now, not a chart of yesterday. And they want to talk to a visitor while that person is still on the page. Google Analytics is good at counting. Hitsteps shows you the people behind the counts. We make Hitsteps, so do not just take our word for it. Try it on your own traffic with the 7-day trial.
Numbers. How many visits you got, which channels they came from, and how your Google Ads campaigns converted.
Who your visitors are, what they do on each page, the chance to talk to them live, an alert when your site goes down, and tracking that does not set cookies without consent.
If you need GA for ad plumbing, keep it. But run Hitsteps next to it to actually see and convert your visitors.
This is the biggest reason people switch.
Hitsteps does not store cookies without your visitors' permission. If a visitor does not give consent, Hitsteps falls back to session based tracking without cookies. Our data centers are in Europe.
Google Analytics 4 works differently. Data is processed by Google, and in the EU most sites show a cookie consent banner before GA loads.
One honest note. No tool can make your site compliant on its own. As the site owner, you are still responsible for any notice or consent your use of analytics, chat, and integrations requires. Read our Privacy Policy and Terms, and ask your own adviser if you are unsure.
You do not need to edit your theme or paste code.
Install the free Hitsteps Web Analytics plugin from WordPress.org and activate it.
Open Settings, then Hitsteps. Connect your Hitsteps account and save your API key.
Open your site in another tab. Your own visit should appear in the live dashboard.
Inside WordPress admin you get dashboard widgets for a summary, recent visitors, a visitor map, live paths, and pageviews. Each post and page also shows a small daily pageviews graph. Google Analytics is usually added with Google's Site Kit plugin or a tag snippet. That part is easy too. The harder part is learning GA4's event based reports once the data starts coming in.
Google Analytics does not do live chat. Hitsteps does.
When a visitor starts a chat, you see their journey next to the conversation. Where they came from, which pages they read, and what page they are on now. So you can answer the real question instead of asking how you can help.
Live chat is available on paid plans. The number of chat agents depends on your plan, from 1 up to 15.
The Hitsteps live feed shows people as they move through your site, page by page. For each visit you can see the entry page, time on site, browser, device, and approximate location. Returning visitors get a profile, so you can see their earlier visits too.
Anonymous visitors stay anonymous. Hitsteps does not reveal who someone is unless your site passes a known identifier, for example after a login or form.
GA4 also has a Realtime report, but it focuses on totals and trends. Individual paths live in its Explore reports.
Hitsteps also covers:
With GA4, you need separate tools for heatmaps and uptime checks. In Hitsteps they live in the same account.
See which links, buttons, and menus get clicked, and which get ignored. Growth plan and above.
Get an alert when your site goes down and see how it affected your traffic. Pro plan and above.
See where people drop off between steps. Pro plan (20 funnels) and Business plan (50 funnels).
Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, Ninja Forms, and Jetpack Contact Form. The visitor's journey can also be added to your form notification emails.
If you sell with WooCommerce, Hitsteps can follow shoppers from product views to cart, checkout, and order. You can see abandoned carts, where people drop out of checkout, and which journeys led to a purchase. Refunds are tracked too.
The Commerce integration is included on Pro and above. It collects data from the day you switch it on. Older orders are not imported.
GA4 can count WooCommerce sales with an extra plugin or tag setup. What it does not give you is a live view of the shopper behind each order, or a chat window to help them before they leave the cart.
We will be straight about it. Google Analytics is free, and it is the standard plumbing for Google Ads and BigQuery. That is a narrow job. Here is what it covers, and what you lose if it is all you run.
| Topic | Google Analytics | What you miss without Hitsteps |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free for most sites. | Free numbers do not tell you who is on your site or why they leave. Hitsteps paid plans start at $4.99 a month, with a 7-day Pro trial. |
| Google Ads | Direct link to Google Ads, shared conversions, and remarketing audiences. | Ads bring people in. Hitsteps shows what each of them does once they land, and lets you chat with them while they are still there. |
| BigQuery | Raw data exports for deep analysis. | Raw exports need someone to dig through them. Hitsteps shows the journey of each visit right in the dashboard. |
| Your visitors | Totals, trends, and reports you build yourself. | Who is on your site right now, which page they are on, and where they came from. |
| Talking to visitors | No live chat. | Live chat with the visitor's journey beside the conversation (paid plans). |
| Site goes down | No uptime monitoring. | An alert when your site goes down, and a view of how it hit your traffic (Pro and above). |
| Privacy | EU sites usually need a consent banner before GA loads. | No cookies without consent, with tracking that keeps working without them. Data centers in Europe. |
So keep GA for ad plumbing if you must. But run Hitsteps to actually see and convert your visitors.
You do not have to rip anything out. If your Google Ads setup depends on GA, leave it there. That is plumbing.
But plumbing does not show you the person reading your pricing page right now, or let you answer their question before they close the tab. Install the Hitsteps plugin next to GA and see what you have been missing from the first visit.
Hitsteps is billed monthly in US dollars, based on pageviews.

GA4 costs nothing, but it also does not show you who your visitors are or let you talk to them. The 7-day Pro trial lets you see the difference on your own traffic.
Hitsteps does not set cookies without permission, and it keeps tracking without cookies when consent is not given. Whether your site needs a banner also depends on everything else you run, like chat, ads, or embeds. You are responsible for your own notice and consent, so check what your site needs.
