First-party on-site search intent

Discover what visitors search for on your website

Hitsteps Internal Keywords captures supported searches performed inside your own website, ranks the exact terms people entered, and connects each term to the tracked visitors and journeys behind it.

  • Rank recorded on-site search terms for the date range you choose
  • Open the matching visitors and review what they did before and after searching
  • Use internal-search terms in visitor filters and reusable Segments
What it does

Turn on-site searches into product and content decisions

A search box is a direct expression of visitor intent. The term ranking shows recurring demand, while visitor drill-down adds the page path, source, device, location, actions, and outcome needed to understand what happened around each search.

Internal Keywords is a first-party site-search report built from supported search signals on your own website. It is separate from search-engine keyword reporting: it describes what visitors searched for after arriving on your site, not the Google or Bing query that may have brought them there.

Internal search-term report

Review recorded terms with search totals for the selected period, filter the list, and quickly identify the language visitors use for products, services, help, and content.

Exact visitor drill-down

Select a term to open the matching visitors, then inspect each available journey instead of trying to explain intent from an aggregate number alone.

Filters and Segments

Combine an internal term with country, source, page, device, Action, or other supported conditions, and save useful combinations as Segments for repeat analysis.

Practical context

Automatic detection covers common patterns, not every custom search

Hitsteps recognizes common query parameters and URL patterns used by Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Joomla. If a custom search keeps its term only in a POST body, application state, or an unrecognized parameter, send that value explicitly with the supported MySearch field so the tracker does not have to guess.

Only searches that reach the tracker through a supported signal can appear. Results also depend on tracker coverage, consent, browser behavior, retention, and the selected date range.
Workflow

How Internal Keywords works

Keep tracking active on search-result pages

Install the Hitsteps tracker across the site and verify that visits to your internal search results reach the correct website profile.

Let Hitsteps recognize the search term

Common Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Joomla search URL patterns are recognized automatically. A custom implementation can supply the term explicitly through the supported MySearch tracking value.

Compare terms in the report

Choose a date range, review up to the leading 100 recorded terms, and filter the list to investigate a product name, topic, spelling, or phrase.

Open visitors and act on the evidence

Drill into the visits behind a term, compare their journeys and outcomes, and use a visitor filter or Segment when the question requires more conditions.

Use cases

Questions Internal Keywords can help answer

Product and service demand

Find products, categories, variants, or services visitors actively request, including language that differs from your current navigation and catalog labels.

Content gaps

Spot recurring questions that deserve a landing page, help article, comparison, clearer product description, or more visible route through the site.

Search experience problems

Investigate searches followed by exits, repeated reformulations, or unexpected paths to discover where results, synonyms, spelling support, or navigation may need attention.

Questions and answers

Internal Keywords FAQ

Clear answers about what this feature reports, how to use it, and where its limits are.

Which website platforms are recognized automatically?

Hitsteps recognizes common internal-search URL patterns used by Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Joomla. Themes, plugins, headless storefronts, and custom routing can change those patterns, so test your own search flow after installation.

Can I see the visitors behind an internal search term?

Yes. Select a term to open matching tracked visitors and inspect the available page journey and surrounding context. The result remains subject to your date range, retention, consent settings, and tracker coverage.

How is this different from Google Search or Search Console keywords?

Internal Keywords records supported searches performed on your own website after a visitor arrives. Search-engine keyword reports concern queries used on an external search engine before the visit, and those organic terms are often withheld.
